The Center for the New Energy Economy (CNEE) is pleased to announce that Michael Richard will join our team in September.

Michael recently concluded two 5-year terms as a Commissioner on the Maryland Public Service Commission. He will join CNEE as a Senior Policy Advisor to lead and advise projects on clean energy, transmission, and electricity markets across the country.

Michael’s work spans more than 20 years of public service, including an appointment to the Maryland Energy Administration, where he served as Director under Governor Robert Ehrlich, at the Department of Energy under President George W. Bush. Michael also served as Governor Larry Hogan’s Deputy Chief of Staff and as a board member and President at the Organization of PJM States, Inc. He spent 10 years at the Nuclear Energy Institute and has experience in the private sector with the Westinghouse Electric Company. Richard earned his B.A. from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, and his M.B.A from the University of Maryland, College Park.

CNEE’s Acting Director, Dr. Suzanne Tegen, commented, “Mike’s extensive experience in energy policy, industry, regulation and deep knowledge of electricity markets will greatly benefit the policymakers and clean energy partners we engage with throughout the country. We are thrilled to welcome him to CNEE and to Colorado State University.”

Mike added, “I’m honored to join Colorado State University and the exceptional team at the Center for the New Energy Economy. This opportunity allows me to continue my commitment to public service and to advancing a clean energy future. I look forward to leveraging my experience in both state and federal government, as well as in the energy sector, to convene experts and policymakers, foster bipartisan dialogue, and help develop practical, forward-looking solutions to the energy and environmental challenges of our time.”
